People's Choice Award Voters selected Jessica McCoy's painting, Tent, for the People's Choice Award from this year's Au Naturel: The Nude in the 21st Century exhibit. Throughout the duration of the exhibit, from February 17 to April 14, all visitors to the gallery and show were invited to cast their vote for the People's Choice Award. After the close of the exhibit, all votes were tallied, and it has been determined that Jessica McCoy's painting entitled Tent was chosen for the award. Tent is an impressive large-scale watercolor painting measuring 42" x 87". Ms. McCoy describes the concept of "tent" in her painting "as either claustrophobic or as a shield against the outdoors. It is unclear whether the figure is better off inside the translucent, fragile space, or outside in the ambiguously populated forest. I would be thrilled if the viewer experienced confusion over whether this work is soft or threatening." This is actually the second consecutive year that Ms. McCoy has participated in the Au Naturel exhibit, and her work received recognition last year as well. The late Laura Russo, who served as the juror for the 2010 competition, selected Ms. McCoy's oil painting entitled Bathroom II for first place. Ms. McCoy is compelled to enter the competition because of its unique focus. "Au Naturel takes a classic, often formal genre and introduces us to artists who are approaching the study of the figure in ways that are innovative and modern," she explains. | |
