My paintings are created with the intention of helping women overcome the shame they may feel about themselves and their bodies. I paint women of all shapes and sizes, ages and races with the express intention of portraying their utter authenticity and beauty. Madison Avenue gives us endlessly persistent pictures of how women should look and behave. These values have become ingrained in our society to the extent that eight-year-old girls already feel pressure to lose weight, and African American children consistently choose white dolls with blue eyes as the smart, pretty ones and the brown-skinned children as naughty and ugly.
I offer women and men an alternative to this heresy. I offer them a view of real women with bulges, wrinkles, scars, and the self-awareness to know how gorgeous they are. Rail-thin, 5'10", and adolescent is beautiful and so is old, black, tattooed, and gay. The range is tremendous. It's time to recognize it.
