The Nude in the 21st Century |

Junsoo Kim As I consider a human figure as fragments of color, I look for abstract elements within objects and the backgrounds. Seeing a person and the surrounding as vibrating energy, I want to view how they interact with each other and can be fused together. I convert them into planes of color combination to be simplified and less rendered, so the whole image has an abstract interpretation of emotions and imaginations. From my perspective, not only the light creates the form, but it also gives hints and opportunities to recompose the subjects to be my own comprehension. At the first step, I build up a basic value composition to get one big flow, and after that planes of color are spread out onto the base stroke by stroke. Creating variations upon the fundamental principles of light and the shadow, I make decisions on such things as how much I depict in the focal area, and where I break the boundaries and combine the figure and the back ground. I aim to create uncertainty in the overall atmosphere to leave the work in some amount of opened possibility which allows the viewers to imagine and feel the emotion in their own way. I experience a difficult decision making process to balance the dynamic flow of the color planes with a vague atmosphere. | |
