The Nude in the 21st Century |

Amber Stene The figure has always been present in my work, and yet, it is forever challenging to me. In my studio work, my figures are often in demanding poses and surreal scenarios, and so much of my work relies on photo references. Missing out on intuitive drawing, I seek out opportunities to draw from life as a way to solidify my skills. The demanding spontaneity of capturing a figure from a live model - under the pressure of time - offers an honesty to the finished work. In front of the model, I'm faced with making swift, instinctual decisions that ultimately create an illusion of life. It's like a dance on paper. Beyond capturing the figure, I'm also fascinated with the formal aspects of paint play and mark-making and so am slave to both the academic and the playful. But ultimately within my works created from live models, I am seeking a human connection, a sense of living, a recognition of self in the figure on paper. | |
