Playa Float, Monotype, 20" x 16" x 1"

Nanette Wallace’s gestural artwork is created as an emotional response to the world around her, with an especially deep connection to water, nature, and the play of light. She approaches her work with an emphasis on experimentation and intuition, allowing the spontaneous nature of the monotype medium to guide her. Her monotypes are created using crude tools including q-tips, her fingertips wrapped in cloth, and brayers to add and remove ink from a plexiglass plate. Her completed images are transferred onto paper by pressing the plate and paper together using a printing press. The printing process yields one unique singular print. Monotypes are often referred to as “the painterly print” since only one image can be created in the process. Nanette’s recent series of monotype explores women in liminal spaces in both natural and other-worldly settings. Her ethereal figures capture private moments of contemplation and solitude that both connect and distance themselves from the viewer.
